Jada West, a 12-year-old student at Mason Creek Middle School in Villa Rica, Georgia, died in March 2026, three days after a fight with another student at a school bus stop. On Monday, October 12, 2026, Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine announced that her office will not file criminal charges, saying an autopsy found Jada had an underlying genetic heart condition and that the fight could not be definitively linked to her death.

The decision ends a seven-month review of a case that drew wide attention after videos of the fight spread online. Jada's family, through their attorneys, said they were "incredibly disappointed" with the outcome, according to CBS News Atlanta.

Who Was Jada West?

Jada West was 12 years old and a sixth-grader at Mason Creek Middle School in Douglas County, west of Atlanta, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Her family has a GoFundMe page, which is where the photo shared in news coverage of her case came from. Attorney Harry Daniels, who said he is related to Jada, spoke for the family at a press conference in March, the AJC reported.

District Attorney Racine described the loss in plain terms. "A child's death, understandably, brings shock and difficult questions," she said, according to the AJC. She added that the incident "should have been a tiny blip on this girl's history."

What Happened at the Villa Rica Bus Stop?

According to the district attorney's account, as reported by CBS News Atlanta and WSB-TV, the trouble began on the school bus home on the afternoon of Thursday, March 5, 2026. An argument started between Jada and another student after the other girl told students to be quiet while the bus was stopped at a railroad crossing. Other students encouraged the confrontation.

The argument continued after both girls got off the bus near the Ashley Place subdivision on Reflective Waters Drive, shortly after 5:20 p.m., CBS News Atlanta reported. Racine described a mutual fight that lasted about 17 seconds, WSB-TV reported. Both girls fell during the fight, and bystanders separated them.

Jada collapsed soon after and became unresponsive. The other student and her mother, a registered nurse, came to help, according to the AJC. Jada was taken to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica and then moved to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Scottish Rite Hospital, where she died three days later, CBS News Atlanta reported.

Why Did the District Attorney Decline Charges?

The key finding came from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's autopsy. Racine said testing revealed an underlying genetic heart condition that led to Jada's death, and that the family may not have known about it, according to the AJC.

Racine said the stress of the argument or the fight could have contributed, but that the evidence could not prove a direct medical link. "There is no way to make a definitive medical determination that this incident led to the condition," she said at the news conference, as reported by WSB-TV, CBS News Atlanta and the AJC.

Investigators also could not determine who started the fight, CBS News Atlanta reported. Villa Rica police interviewed the other student, her mother, the bus driver, a bus driver trainee, 12 students and a bystander. Racine said the school found no record of earlier problems between the girls, and a review of their phones found no earlier messages between them.

What About the Bullying Claims?

Shortly after Jada's death, her family said she had been bullied, according to WSB-TV and the AJC. The district attorney said the investigation did not support that. "The interviews or any of the evidence did not substantiate a history of bullying, ongoing conflict," Racine said, according to the AJC.

Racine also said that the other student, her family and some witnesses received threats after the videos went viral, and that the student's family moved out of Douglas County. MotiveX is not naming the other student, who is a minor and has not been charged with any crime.

What Jada's Family Has Said

The family disagrees with the decision. In a statement through their attorneys reported by CBS News Atlanta, they said: "The simple fact is that Jada's genetic condition was exacerbated because she was attacked at the school bus stop."

WSB-TV reported that attorney Harry Daniels says Jada had a heart condition known as Long QT, which physical exertion can make worse, and that he believes the other student should have been charged because the fight led to that exertion. The news reports on the decision do not mention any further legal action by the family.

What Happens Next

With the district attorney's announcement, there is no criminal case pending in Jada's death. Racine said, "We recognize that this determination does not ease the pain or the significance of the loss of Jada," according to CBS News Atlanta. Any further steps would be up to the family and their attorneys, and MotiveX will report on any new development in the case.
