Five young people were killed in the Hickory Hill area of Memphis, Tennessee, early on Sunday, October 11, 2026, when the Toyota Corolla they were riding in collided with a Memphis Police Department patrol car at the intersection of Hickory Hill and East Raines roads. Rodney McNeal Jr., 20, cousins Carlesha Fifer, 19, and Syria Fifer, 21, Messiah Lee, 20, and a 17-year-old from Mississippi died. A sixth person in the car survived with serious injuries, and two officers were hurt.

Days later, the families say they still do not know who was at fault. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), which is leading the investigation, released a preliminary crash report on Thursday, October 15. According to FOX13 Memphis, the report named the five people who died but added nothing new about how the collision happened. "Four days for that? It gave us nothing," said Ranaiya McNeal, Rodney's sister.

What Happened in Hickory Hill?

FOX13 reported that the crash happened shortly after 12:25 a.m. on Sunday. According to Memphis police, two officers were driving to a call near Flowering Peach Drive and Mendenhall Road when their patrol vehicle and the Corolla collided at the intersection. WMC Action News 5 reported that MPD confirmed the officers were heading to a "man down" call that turned out to be a homicide.

Action News 5 also reported that surveillance video from a gas station at the intersection shows the police cruiser, with its lights on, going through on a green light while the Corolla had a red light. That account comes from the station's review of the footage; THP has not released findings on the cause, and officials have not said how fast the cruiser was travelling or whether its siren was on.

Four people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene and a fifth died later at a hospital, FOX13 reported. The two injured officers were treated and released from the hospital by Monday.

Who Were the Victims?

Rodney McNeal Jr., 20, was remembered by his former Hamilton High School football coach, Cory Robinson, who told Action News 5 that McNeal had become like family to him and said he lived his life the way he played basketball. Hundreds of people attended a vigil for him on Monday evening.

Carlesha Fifer, 19, was getting ready to celebrate her 20th birthday next month, her mother, Shoneke Williams, told Action News 5. Williams described her as one of the "funniest, happiest, goofiest" young people anyone could know.

Syria Fifer, 21, was Carlesha's cousin. Her family called her "an angel on Earth" and set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses.

Messiah Lee, 20, was identified by family members on Tuesday. The fifth person who died was a 17-year-old from Mississippi, according to the THP report as described by FOX13. That teen has not been formally named by officials, so MotiveX is not including a name here.

The only survivor from the car, 19-year-old Laterrius Mathis Jr., is Rodney McNeal Jr.'s cousin. His family told FOX13 he has had several emergency surgeries but is showing signs of progress. "He's opening his eyes," his cousin Ranaiya McNeal said.

Has Anyone Been Charged?

No. No charges have been announced, and no agency has said who caused the crash. The officers involved have not been publicly named. THP is handling the investigation, which FOX13 described as standard procedure when Memphis officers are involved in a serious crash.

What Police and Officials Have Said

Memphis Mayor Paul Young issued a statement on Monday morning. "Five young people lost their lives last night," he said, and offered prayers to everyone affected.

FOX13 reviewed MPD's own vehicle operation policy after the crash. The policy says officers responding to an emergency call must use both blue lights and siren before entering an intersection, and that even though state law lets emergency drivers break some traffic rules, "this action must be taken with extreme caution." It also says officers who face a red light or stop sign during an emergency response must come to a complete stop before going through. FOX13 said it asked MPD whether the officers followed that policy and had not received an answer at the time of its report.

Why Families Say They Need Answers

Ranaiya McNeal told FOX13 the families have been talking with each other and share the same question. "I feel the investigation is taking too long, period," she said, adding that footage and answers would bring her family some peace and show "that my baby wasn't wrong."

Not every relative has called for quick conclusions. At a Tuesday night vigil, Danielle Conley, an aunt of Carlesha and Syria, asked people to let investigators finish their work before deciding what happened. Another aunt, Samantha Dowden, remembered the young people as "Perfect, perfect kids."

What Happens Next

THP's full crash investigation is still open. The families are waiting for the agency's findings on what caused the collision and for any release of video. MotiveX will update this case if THP announces its conclusions or if prosecutors or MPD take any action.
