Alyssa Wilson, a 17-year-old high school senior from North St. Louis County, Missouri, was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 170 on the evening of Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Investigators say a single shot fired from the shoulder of the highway struck her car, and she crashed near Midland Boulevard in Overland. A Texas husband and wife, Willie and Taiya Herndon, now face charges in her death.

Police have described the shooting as random. According to the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, the couple had no connection to Alyssa. She was on her way to an event at the St. Louis Zoo when she was struck, according to reports from KMOX and Spectrum News.

Who Was Alyssa Wilson?

Alyssa was a senior at McCluer North High School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. In a letter to families and staff, Principal Dr. Kaylan Holloway described her as a student-athlete and office aide who was looking forward to college after graduation. "In this time of loss, please keep Alyssa, her family, and all who loved her in your thoughts and hearts," Holloway wrote.

Her father, Robert Hickman, spoke at a news conference on Monday, October 19. He said his daughter was 60 days away from her 18th birthday and that the family had been planning a trip to Disney together. KMOX reported that he said she wanted to attend SIUE (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) and study criminal justice. Hickman thanked the investigators who worked the case and called the shooting "a senseless act."

What Happened on I-170?

Officers were called at about 7:20 p.m. on October 14 to a crash in the southbound lanes of I-170 near Midland Boulevard in Overland. They found Alyssa inside the crashed car with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

At Monday's news conference, the Major Case Squad said surveillance video showed a white SUV pull onto the shoulder of southbound I-170 just south of St. Charles Rock Road. Investigators say a man got out, stood beside the vehicle briefly, and a shot was fired. He then got back in and the vehicle drove away. According to KMOV, police say the vehicle is registered to Taiya Herndon and that she was inside it.

A federal complaint described by KMOV lays out a tighter timeline from surveillance footage: the vehicle slowly approached the area around 7:03 p.m., a man investigators identify as Willie Herndon got out at about 7:05 p.m., and Alyssa's car passed him at 7:07 p.m., seconds before a gunshot was captured on video and her car crashed.

Has Anyone Been Arrested?

Yes. Investigators used license plate reader data to identify the suspect vehicle and tracked it to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, where officers arrested the couple. Police said a search of the hotel room turned up evidence, including the gun. According to the Major Case Squad, Willie Herndon gave details about his involvement and shared information about possible ongoing investigations in other areas.

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price-Smith said Willie Herndon is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond. Taiya Herndon is charged with hindering prosecution, accused of driving her husband to Illinois after the shooting, and is held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. KMOV also reported that Willie Herndon was charged in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois with being a felon in possession of a firearm; the federal complaint cites prior felony convictions in Los Angeles.

Most reports list Willie Herndon's age as 42, while Spectrum News reported it as 43. Both Willie and Taiya Herndon are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court.

Is the Case Linked to Another Highway Shooting?

Investigators believe it may be. KMOV reported that court documents tie Willie Herndon to an October 11 shooting on Interstate 55 in which a vehicle that had just exited onto Bates Avenue was hit by a single gunshot. Surveillance video from that scene showed a white SUV parked on the side of the interstate that left right after the shot, and investigators say Herndon's vehicle was seen in the area about 30 minutes earlier.

According to the documents, a cartridge case found at the I-55 scene carries the same headstamp as one recovered near the spot on I-170 where investigators believe the shot that hit Alyssa's car was fired. Lab testing to determine whether both came from the same gun was still pending. No charges tied to the I-55 shooting had been reported as of October 19.

What Police Have Said

The Major Case Squad has not released a motive. Spectrum News reported that investigators held back on discussing a possible motive because they are looking into the suspects' possible links to other ongoing cases. It is not publicly known why the couple, who live in Arlington, Texas, were in the St. Louis area. While the investigation was still open, the Major Case Squad asked anyone who drove on I-170 between Airport Road and Olive around 7 p.m. that night, especially drivers with dash camera video, to contact CrimeStoppers.

What Happens Next

Willie and Taiya Herndon face the state charges in St. Louis County, and Willie Herndon also faces the federal firearm charge filed in Illinois. Court dates had not been widely reported as of Monday. Investigators are still awaiting lab results on the ballistic evidence and are reviewing whether the case connects to other incidents.
