Jasmyne Garcia, a 34-year-old mother of three, was killed in Morgan Hill, California, and her husband, Roy Anthony Lopez, 37, has been charged with murder and child endangerment in Santa Clara County. Police say Lopez drove her to a San Jose hospital on the morning of Saturday, October 3, 2026, and told staff there that he had killed his wife.
Lopez made his first court appearance on Wednesday, October 7, and did not enter a plea. Garcia's family has since identified her publicly through a fundraiser for her children, describing a devoted mother whose loss has left them struggling for words. Lopez is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty in court.
Who Was Jasmyne Garcia?
The Santa Clara County medical examiner had not publicly released the victim's name when local stations reported on the charges. Her identity comes from court documents and from a GoFundMe page started by Jorge Garcia, according to KTVU and ABC7 News.
The fundraiser says Garcia was born and raised in Salinas, California, and describes her as a woman of faith who loved her three children.
"No family should ever have to endure the unimaginable pain of losing someone they love in such a heartbreaking way," the family wrote on the fundraiser page, which says donations will go toward the children's needs.
NBC Bay Area reported that Garcia and Lopez had been married for more than 10 years.
What Happened in Morgan Hill?
According to the Morgan Hill Police Department, Lopez arrived at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose at about 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, October 3. Police say he reported that he had killed his wife. First responders found the woman inside a parked car at the hospital. Paramedics gave emergency care, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
San Jose police detained Lopez without incident and notified Morgan Hill police, whose investigators traced the case back to a home on Vintage Lane in Morgan Hill. "During the investigation officers determined that it had been committed in Morgan Hill," Sgt. Sean Bayard said, according to NBC Bay Area.
Officers who checked the home found three children, ages 14, 6 and 3. They were placed in the custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children's Services, police said.
Court filings described by KTVU and NBC Bay Area give investigators' account of the night before. The filings allege that on Friday, October 2, Lopez had been drinking and assaulted his 14-year-old stepson after the boy asked to go bike riding with a friend. The teenager later told police that when he came home late that night, he found the house in disarray and his mother seriously hurt in a bedroom. The next morning, he said, Lopez took her to the hospital.
Prosecutors allege the two younger children were present during the attack on their mother. Police said a firearm was not used. These are allegations that have not been tested in court.
Has Anyone Been Arrested?
Yes. Lopez was questioned by Morgan Hill police and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to police. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office then charged him with murder and child endangerment, KTVU and NBC Bay Area reported.
He appeared before a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge on Wednesday, October 7, and did not enter a plea. KTVU reported that the judge issued domestic violence protective orders barring him from contact with the three children. He was ordered to return to court on December 15.
NBC Bay Area reported that Lopez faces 25 years to life in prison if he is convicted.
What Police and Prosecutors Have Said
Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Barbara Cathcart has commented publicly on the case. "This is an incredibly tragic case," she said, according to NBC Bay Area. ABC7 News reported that she called the allegations particularly disturbing because young children were present.
Morgan Hill police have not publicly given a motive. Earlier in the week, NBC Bay Area quoted Sgt. Bayard as saying of the children, "They were at the house we believe at the time, and they are in safe custody right now."
NBC Bay Area also reported that no restraining order had been filed against Lopez.
What Happens Next
Lopez is due back in court on December 15, 2026. The official cause of death had not been publicly released as of the latest reports.
Morgan Hill police have asked anyone with information to contact Sgt. Sean Bayard at 408-607-3032.
